NAQP January 16th/17th 2010
The North American QSO Party - SSB was held on January 16th 2010 starting at 1800Z and running till 0600Z January 17th 2010. A single operator could operate 10 out of the 12 contest hours and was limited in power to 100 watts. One of the Country Uncles noted for his contest participation in past was on the air and worked the contest - Dennis K4NV.
With new video technology in his shack broadcasting his every "Q" it did not take long for even the casual observer to recognize the skill it takes to contest these days. Computer logging of course makes it a bit easier than the old paper logs - assuming you can type. However, listening via the video/audio Dennis was sending out it became clear quickly that one constant has not changed over the years. The lack of ability and skill from some of the OTHER contest participants. Their inability to give their name phonetically, misspell their own name phonetically, or even give their call wrong phonetically when asked for a repeat was just astounding. Dennis displayed an unusually high level of patients in dealing with the callers. It was amazing to watch. One other thing was very clear - there are some parents out there that just hated their children - that fact solely based on the names that they gave them. I think the best one that was heard was one old fellow from TX his name was "HOT" yes that is Hotel - Oscar - Tango. Oh well, another contest in the books. Here is the results for Dennis' station.
K4NV Contest Results 1180 Contacts over the 10 hour period Dennis worked the contest 179 Multipliers For a total of 211,800 Points
Very nice job!

CQ WW SSB 2009 Contest Results... Country Uncle Style
This past weekend the CQ World Wide SSB contest was held. The Country Uncles in true CU style decided to rework the contest and participate in their own manner. With Dennis K4NV off to the NQ4I Super Contest station to participate the remaining contesting CU's decided to have their own contest with in a contest. The rules were simple - work as many countries as you can during the normal contest hours. Assisted or non assisted, high power or QRP, any Ham band it made no difference - just work as many countries as you could during the hours of the contest. Of course trying not to log any dummy contacts paced on spotting services as checkers by CQ (as some notable Hams have been accused of recently). The speed that the CU contest committe move is nothing short of miraculous in determining a winner - in fact the winner was determined at the close of the contest Sunday Night. Not months later as with the case by some other governing authorities.
And the Winner is:
Van Smith KW4CC King Whopper Four Cheeseburger Cheeseburger
Van piled up an impressive 139 countries during the contest period. Congratulations to Van for the very hard work. Others, Milton N4DA, Joe W4JSM, Gary WB4CSW and Tony KE4PK all participated but fell short of the mark set by Van. Congratulation again to Van for an outstanding performance in this years contest with in a contest.
